What To Expect From A Deep Tissue Massage

Some people are under the impression that every massage will be the same. That could not be further from the truth. Anyone that goes in thinking that they are in for a nice relaxing Swedish massage and that has mistakenly signed up for a deep tissue massage is in for a rude awakening.

A deep tissue massage is pretty much what it sounds like. This is a very specific type of massage that is meant to dig into the deeper layers of muscle and break up the tension. Specific areas that can benefit the most are the neck, lower back, and shoulders. However, there are other areas of the body that can also benefit from this type of massage.

The actual style of the massage may be very similar to a regular massage, but the penetration of the muscles will be much deeper. Watching a deep tissue massage, you will also notice that the actual movements are much slower and more concentrated. This is how they get deep into the muscles and work the muscle tension out.

Some that receive a deep tissue massage will report that they can be very painful. In all honesty, there probably will be some moments of discomfort. This is normal, but it should never be to the point that you are unable to take the pain.

During the massage, communication becomes very important. There will be moments that the masseuse is digging deep to get the knots and tension out and it may get to a point that you simply cannot tolerate it. When this happens, communicate that to the therapist and they can use a different technique or ease up on the area.

It is also important to note that some pain may linger for a day or two after the massage has been given. This will generally have nothing to do with the skill of the therapist, it is just the fact that they went deep into the tissue and it will be naturally sore. In most cases, they will tell you to drink a lot of water and ice the area over the next couple of days.

When getting a deep tissue massage, realize that it is going to be unlike just about any other massage that can be had. Remember that movie that caused some chuckling when the masseuse got up on the table and dug their elbow in between the person’s should blades? That may very well be you it happens to if that is the technique that the therapist uses.

It may seem a little scarier than it is by what you read about a deep tissue massage, but rest assured that when done properly, there is nothing better for certain types of muscle and body pain. Digging deep into the tissue will allow a lot of stress to be relieved and after the first few days are over, the feeling will be incredible. Once you get used to the massage, the pain will go away quicker and the body will thank you for those few brief moments of being uncomfortable.
